VOLCANIC CALDERA

Very early in the morning we were woke up by our expedition leader. MS Fram was approaching Neptune Bellows, the entrance to a volcanic area: Deception Island. It was time to go to the outside desks to have a better view. Our captain navigated through the caldera of the volcano, named Port Foster. Geology and whaling history are combined in Deception Island. Whalers Bay, located in the caldera, was home to factory whaling ships during the early 20th century.

Our day continued with very interesting lectures about the first Antarctic explorers, the king penguin, whales, and geology. It was like a day at school. We had a holistic view of Antarctica.
Some of the lectures were kindly interrupted by whale blows and tabular icebergs.

Today it was a real expeditionary day.
